Mexican exports from the State of Chihuahua increase
Manufactured exports originating in Chihuahua, Mexico registered a total dollar value of US $16.3 billion during the first four months of 2014. This number represents a 7.9% increase over the same period of the prior year.
Exports from the State of Chihuahua during the June – April period were led by increased production in Ciudad Juarez, which accounted for 77.9% of the reported total, and the State’s Capital, Chihuahua, which contributed 19.1% to the overall increase. This is in additon to higher totals registered by the municipalities of Cuauhtemoc, Delicias, Buenaventura, which added an additional 1.1%, 0.7% and 0.6% to increased exports from the State of Chihuahua, respectively.
Chihuahua’s Center for Economic and Social Information reported that products that made up the increase in exports from the entity during the June to April 2014 period consisted principally of automatic data processing equipment and machinery. The increased percentage value of exports of this class of products over the first four months of 2013 registered thirty-four percent, while production of other processing units increased by sixteen percent, assemblies for automotive seating and automotive wire harnesses increased by a respective twelve and ten percent.
According to the Center for Economic and Social Information, automatic data processing equipment consists of cellular telephones, and diagnostic medical, surgical, orthodontic and veterinary equipment. Other increases in exports from the State of Chihuahua during the first months of 2014 included automatic controls and memory storage devices.
Production in Chihuahua fuels the fifth largest economy of Mexico’s thirty-one states. In the maquiladora manufacturing sector, the State is ranked second nationally as a destination for foreign direct investment in industrial production activities. It follows the State of Nuevo Leon, which is considered to be the industrial capital of Mexico, and produces in excess of ten percent of all Mexican manufactured products. Despite the primacy of Nuevo Leon in the manufacturing sector of the economy, exports from the State of Chihuahua are those most imported by the United States. Chihuhua also is ranked first in the country in generating added value and in manufacturing employment.
